The original Brainerd schoolhouse was built of native stone and completed in 1886. It lay just east of the town limits between Neiman and Horner Streets.

Note the original church in the background of this picture. According to Agnes and Edgar Harder, the church was located on the northeast corner of Horner and Bergman Streets, on a block that had no other buildings in their childhood.
