A Poem: "Brainerd," by "J.E.F."
Brainerd is an infant town,
Yet Brainerd can't be beat;
That is what the strangers say
When they view our business street.
Only five months have passed away,
Since the town survey was made,
And hardly that I'm safe to say,
Since the first foundation was laid.
Now forty business houses
Adorn our handsome street,
All carrying immense stocks of goods,
And their prices can't be beat.
We have a bank on the corner,
That is built of stone and brick,
And is provided with a fine cashier,
Who counts your money awful slick.
Our school is now in running order --
Nearly fifty scholars now attend,
With a trusty little school ma'am
Who tries their ways to mend.
There is a church under construction,
And lots of dwellings too,
Some of large dimensions
That are daisy's now to view.
We will be incorporated,
As soon as the papers are through;
Then we are going to have things move
Just as we want them to.
With the best locations that Kansas affords
And a splendid country around,
There isn't a chance for a single doubt,
But Brainerd is a fine young town.
Someone said that Brainerd was dead,
But I'd like for him to know,
That Brainerd is alive and on the move,
And still continues to grow.
