The Brainerd Elevator shone brightly in the low October sun on the afternoon in 1994 when I first passed through town. Though abandoned for good after a 1990 wind storm, the elevator occupied a symbolic spot on the north side of K-196, serving as a Brainerd landmark for nearly 70 years.
